Update 9-15-14 “Mac OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 are just around the corner. Both upgrades bring a lot of innovation to your Apple devices, but are unfortunately incompatible with Witness. We have therefore taken the difficult decision to halt further development of Witness. We will continue to support and operate Witness for older versions of Mac OS and iOS until April 2015.”

So…it’s going away… Witness WAS one of the coolest little apps ever.

Witness from Orbicule turns your Mac into a home alarm system using the iSight camera built into your Mac as a motion sensor. If motion is detected, Witness sends mugshots and video to your iPhone or iPad.

For me, Witness is installed on both of our iPhones and on an iMac in my office. The office is where I have the most valuable things in the home…computers, etc. and also happens to be in an area that nearly any intruder would need to pass by to enter or leave the home. Witness protects that space perfectly and will immediately send me a photo of any activity in the area to my iPhone. I can then see if it is someone that is supposed to be there. If not, I call 911 and send the police over immediately.

Witness sells for a one-time fee of $39. It serves as a monitored security system without the $24.95 fee every month. So Witness saves me about $300/year while protecting me better with more information at my fingertips immediately.
