I recently filed and received several trademarks quickly, easily, and at a low cost through Trademarkia.com
Then the letters (scams) started coming in the mail. Note that once you file your trademark, most of the trademark information is of public record so they can obtain your address and actual trademark info easily.
One letter looked very official…as if it was coming directly from the US Government. In the fine print you can read “THIS IS NOT A BILL. THIS IS A SOLICITATION. YOU ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO PAY THE AMOUNT STATED ABOVE UNLESS YOU ACCEPT THIS OFFER. ” I almost started to pay it before I checked my records and realized I had already paid the government fee. Then I looked closer. For only $375 they would notify me 10 years from now that I need to renew my trademark. (Likely, so will the actual Trademark Office.)
Several other solicitations claim that for several hundred dollars they will list my trademark in an overseas directory to protect it internationally. They actually provide no protection at all. It’s as if they will list your trademark in a “Who’s Who of Kids That Draw with Crayons.” It’s meaningless. Again, it looks official and because of the cost involved you assume it must be worth it or necessary.
I did a quick search online…and sure enough…they’re out there. Don’t be fooled. If you’re going through an attorney, check with them before paying any additional “bills” regarding your trademarks.
Also…put it on your calendar to reaffirm your trademark five years after it is granted.
