True multitasking is now available for iOS 9! This multitasking is not to be confused with UISplitViewController which is available on 6+ devices as well as iPad. Multitasking is currently iPad specific, and it was designed with the new iPad Pro in mind since it has the much larger screen it makes it ideal for having two or more processes running simlutaneously. If you are thinking about having an app that is compatible with multitasking you will need to pick one of the following flavors:

  • iPadPro_Lifestyle-SplitScreen-PRINTSlide Over – is the most commonly used multitasking feature for iOS 9. Using Apples new two finger swipe gesture from the right side of the screen to the center allows you to pick an app to run in a smaller frame that extends from the right. The width of this screen is the same as an iPhone app so if your app is built using Auto Layout and is optimized for iPhone you are already most of the way there.
  • Split View – lets the user resize and run two apps side by side. Apps built for split view in mind require a little additional Auto Layout magic.
  • Picture on Picture – is for video. It allows you to have a small floating view for the video. You can resize it and move it around on the screen to access separate content.

Apple states that apps that use multitasking must be diligent in their resource consumption. Apple also suggests that while Auto Layout isn’t required for iOS 9 apps, apps must conform to the strict Apple Human Interface Guidelines.
