We recently found BatchGeo.com. It’s the fastest way to create Google maps from your data. It accepts addresses, intersections, cities, states, and postal codes and then does the hard work of figuring out where all your data lives in the real world and creating a Google map.

There have been various FileMaker solutions to this problem in the past but they have required getting a Google developer key, learning the Google API (Applications Programming Interface), and doing some major scripting beyond the ability of many developers. This new solution is simple. Nearly any FileMaker developer can make it work simply by adjusting a few fields.

fmBatchGeo_Screen

The database shows this simple way of mapping multiple locations using the web site called BatchGeo.com. A script collects the data and demonstrates a useful custom function called “Tab” to insert tab characters between the data elements. It copies the info to the clipboard and then jumps to the BatchGeo web site.

To use it, simply mark the items you want to map and assign a group code if desired. Then click on the “Batch Geo” button and follow instructions to paste the collected information into the box shown to continue.

The demo file also demonstrates adapting the solution for the iPad/iPhone with multiple layouts using FileMaker Go. The structure of the database takes some design elements from the FileMaker 12 templates.

Download the free fmBatchGeo demo database and give it a try. For more flexible plotting of map points, check out fmFlare and its GIS capabilities.
